“Love is free; to promise for ever to love the same woman is not less absurd than to promise to believe the same creed; such a vow in both cases excludes us from all inquiry.” P. B. Shelley.

Here is extreme FOMO with life reduced to the basic instincts and meaning transferred to the subtle seductions of personal rationalizations of the fleshy impulses. Theses poets, thinking themselves free from authority of man and God, whom they perceived to be man’s God, found themselves in a prison of their own refusals and imaginations. Lost to themselves and spurning the offer of help, they fell hard and fast with beautiful words.

Love is not free, but love frees. For love can only be given by emptying oneself of oneself, even one’s demand to inquire. Love is the only firm ground on which to rest from the troubles and cares of this world. This ground is freely given indeed, but at a very high cost of sacrifice. Someone had to give up their own right to inquiry for love to be offered. And so by standing securely on that ground of love, I may enjoy it’s comfort with my wife and together we can lay our own lives down in love for others. Beauty of relationship: This is all we know on earth, and all we need to know.
